Less than 100 miles from the Tri-Cities near the Kentucky line in Dickenson County, Virginia are two of our area's most remarkable treasures.
The first lies right downtown in the county seat of Cintwood. It's a museum dedicated to the life and music of Ralph Stanley. Doctor Ralph and his brother Carter created a unique sound of traditional music that remains extremely popular today.
Folks from 49 states and 22 foreign countries have come to learn about the life and times of Ralph Stanley. The museum has been up and running for just three and half years and offers many top of the line interactive exhibits.
Just up the road is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of our region. It's known as the Grand Canyon of the South, the Breaks Interstate Park. It was created by the Russell Fork of the big Sandy River over millions of years.
Not only does it offer unbelievable views, but the park offers much more. There is hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, a pool, and over a hundred camping sites. In October world class rafting is created by the release from John Flanagan Reservoir resulting in class five and class six rapids.
World class would describe this mountainous corner of Virginia, a world renowned musician and a place like no other in the world, and both are less than a tank of gas away.
