The FCC approved temporary authority for WCYB to raise our transmitted power. The power has now been raised a factor of four times the original power. This is the maximum power level that we will be allowed. While we continue to recommend an outside combination VHF-UHF antenna instead of an indoor antenna, we make the following recommendations.
1. If using an indoor antenna, extend the rabbit ears as far out as possible and try to locate the antenna near a window or even outside if possible. If using an outside antenna, skip to step #2.
2. Unplug the antenna from your converter box or digital tv tuner.
3. Do a re-scan or channel search with no antenna hooked up. You will not get any stations, but this action will clear the memory of your converter.
4. Hook the antenna back to your converter box or digital tv tuner.
5. Now do another re-scan or channel search.
6. If you are still not getting channel 5, move the antenna to a location opposite of where you tried the first rescan. Try another rescan or channel search.
The WCYB transmitter is located on top of Holston Mountain. Try to point your antenna in that direction. Due to the mountainous terrain in this area, some homes may still not receive the channel 5 signal, especially if you are blocked by a mountain or other structures.
Another big change involves our sister station, WEMT, Channel 39. The FCC has approved the relocation of its transmitter currently located on Viking Mountain in Greeneville, TN to Holston Mountain, TN.
This move will greatly enhance the signal coverage to our viewers in Southwest Virginia enabling 300,000 to either receive WEMT for the first time, or get a better signal. It will also mean that antennas can be pointed to one single location to pick up both WCYB and WEMT.
This move is scheduled for the first half of 2010.
