Johnson City police arrested two people they say were trying to steal a large amount of merchandise from Wal-Mart.

Officers say they were called to the Wal-Mart on West Market Street Friday around 11:00 pm.

Police say the two tried to leave the store with close to $1,000 worth of various merchandise.

Police arrested Christopher Brackins of Johnson City and Penny Ledwell of Elizabethton.

Both are charged with shoplifting over $500.
