Few Leads In Johnson City Murder Case
Quarry Road is a secluded side street in Johnson City. But now it's a street leading to a lot of questions after a man on his way to work early Saturday made a startling find.
"He discovered the body of a white male in the roadway. The subject was found to have been shot multiple times," said Johnson City Police Detective Captain Mike Street.
The victim is 25-year-old Gary Allen Couch from Chuckey, Tenn. Police say whoever shot him intended to kill.
Couch was last seen alive leaving Numan's sports bar in downtown Johnson City around 3 a.m. Saturday morning. Police say Couch was alone at the sports bar. Someone gave him a ride to Johnson City from Greeneville.
Witnesses say he was looking for a ride back to Greeneville, but no one knows who he left with. Staff members inside the bar say Couch was a frequent customer. They described him as a nice guy and say he had been shooting pool with several people Friday night.
"We're following up with people that knew the victim. Who he'd been with, a timeline [of] where he'd been, who he'd talked to," said Street.
So far little information has been obtained. "We've not got a lot of information, not got a lot to go on. [We] don't have a lot of leads to go on," Street added.
Police said they have traced Couch back to a restaurant in Greeneville before he traveled to Johnson City. Employees at the sports bar say they saw him with a large amount of cash.
Detectives say they did not find a wallet with his body.
They are asking anyone with information to give them a call. The detective division can be reach at (423) 434-6166 or call Crimestoppers at (423) 434-6158.
