Earth Day is a time when all of us can do something to pitch in and help out the environment. We checked, and found a few events being held this weekend in honor of Earth Day.
In Kingsport, Tennessee, residents are invited to help clean up trash and debris during the Great American Cleanup on Greenbelt. That will be from nine Saturday morning until 11, and will kick off at the Greenbelt entrance near East Stone Commons, beside PetSmart.
For more information on volunteering for the cleanup, contact Robin Cleary at 423-392-8814.
In Abingdon, Virginia, there will be an Earth Day celebration and e-waste recycling event. The event is Saturday, from nine am, to one in the afternoon, with activities and information on ?living green.? There will also be a drop-off for unwanted electronics, including laptops, printers, scanners, etc. Items with compressors, like refrigerators, ACs and dehumidifiers will not be accepted.
For more information on the Abingdon celebration, contact the Abingdon Convention and Visitors Bureau at 276-676-2282.
Johnson City Boy Scout Troop 35 will collect old tires and batteries over the weekend for recycling. Collection times will be from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon on Saturday and one to five Sunday afternoon at Free Service Tire Company on Eastern Star Road.
The first eight tires per household are recycled for free, but each additional tire will cost $2, and there will be a $1 charge for each wheel. Tires that are more than 20 inches in rim size will not be accepted.
Contact the Free Service Tire Company at 423-349-2700 for more information.
Small business owner and sustainability advocate Anthony Flaccavento will speak at the Emory and Henry College Earth Day event Sunday at four o'clock, behind the post office.
