The Wallace community in Washington County, Virginia is mourning the loss of a young boy Thursday.
Emergency crews were called to Goose Creek Road about a hunting accident that turned out to be fatal. Two brothers, ages 12 and 15, were out Wednesday evening hunting groundhogs. In the process, the younger brother was fatally shot.
Police tell us they're still trying to figure out exactly what happened and why. "The incident occurred and the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head,? Lt. Byron Ashbrook of the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff?s Department said. ?He died this morning at the Bristol Regional Medical Center."
For now, the family deals with the loss of a son, while investigators try to determine what went wrong. "We are dealing with it right now potentially as an accident,? Ashbrook added. ?But like I said, we've just got to cross our T's and dot our I's and make sure that we have everything documented well. The body will be sent to Roanoke for autopsy either this afternoon or tomorrow morning and that will tell us a lot more. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends because it's a tragedy."
